The municipal beach was a 6klm scythe of yellow sand.
There was a pleasant promenade parallel to the beach with tall shady trees, topiary set on trimmed lawns and unusual sculptures. Until mid-March the water was reported: a little rough after midday, temperatures a bit cooler and winds gusty. We had a lovely 22 degrees and so enjoyed morning swims.
We watched heart-in-mouth as a powerboat (used for water sports) made a beach landing with dumping waves onto its wooden trailer. No winch, no guide ropes.
Awesome.
We visited Louisiane Brewhouse and The Sailing Club. These are two very elegant establishments for the well-healed or designer thonged. They offer comfortable beach lounges without hawkers, big veiled mattresses, bars and poolside food by the beach. The brewery had a boutique microbrewery using Aus and NZ ingredients.
Finding tasty snacks wasn’t difficult with every street teaming with stalls, sugarcane juice vendors and cafes, many specializing in seafood. We ordered BBQ duck straight off the street side spit, fish grilled in banana leaf and hot pots with beef offal.
It had a buzzing nightlife with generous Happy HourS – 4hrs! Hedonistic atmosphere and hangover breakies were noted as we did the rounds. We had an evening at the Grove Shack with a free shot of some sort of alcohol but a pretty tight 4 piece band that we could dance to. The daytime activities were visits to islands, bike rides out of town and wandering and watching this amazing culture. The road-crossing skills required in this place included eyes in the back of your head. A few times we have timed our step off the curb to encounter a motorbike or bicycle going the wrong way. “Look both ways constantly and watch for the counter flow !”
